A communal garden or maara kai is based at the Scott Ave Reserve. The other day a group of Owhata Primary School students went to help with some planting. The following captures what one of the students thought of the experience……
Today all of room 5 at Owhata School went to plant potatoes at the community garden on Scott Ave. Whaea Suzanne and her son William helped us. First we had to buddy up and dig lines across the soil. We had to use special gardening tools.
Some girls planted flowers too, so the bees would come to help our plants to grow. It was amazing to plant vegetables for the first time in my life. I love it and I found out that planting is not hard at all. It was fun.
I will visit the gardens to see our plants grow.
