The Mokoia Community Association (MCA) vision
Rotorua East will be vibrant and sustainable with opportunity for all to develop their quality of life to its full potential.
MCA has made a commitment to using community-led principles in working alongside its Eastside communities. These principles include working alongside our communities to create and achieve locally owned visions and goals. It enables our communities to make the most of all they’ve got, using a strength based collaborative approach. In working alongside our Eastside communities MCA may act as a facilitator, broker, advocate, educator administrator and/or communication hub. As well as its community-led activities, MCA also provides:
Adult and Community Education
Based on input from our community and aligned with the Government’s ACE policy, MCA offers support to adults in order to increase their foundations skills. Examples of these classes that have been run include:
· Developing knowledge of Maori language and culture through te reo Maori classes.
· Assisting those who need support with the theory component of the Learners Driver’s Licence.
· Improving the spoken language skills of new migrants through a Diploma of Public Speaking.
· Increasing confidence and work skills around digital literacy through the provision of computer courses.
We have traditionally provided services which support families. This includes:
· Providing the community Plunket Rooms.
· Offering free personal counselling and social worker support to families to those who live Eastside Rotorua
We have always been committed to providing the opportunity for our senior residents to be active and involved. In response to feedback from our seniors we provide monthly trips, guest speakers, classes and support a range of craft, health and education groups which meet monthly in our hall.
MCA coordinates the ER@P (Eastside Rangatahi at the Park) programme. This provides free sporting and recreational activities each week for our Eastside youth aged 12 to 20 years.
The heart of an active community is communication. Our main method of communicating with all of our Eastside communities is “Inside Eastside”, a monthly community magazine distributed by a team of 70 volunteers to around Eastside Rotorua 4,000 households. We also have this website and the Inside Eastside Rotorua Facebook page.
The Mokoia Community Association is privileged to have the support of over 80 volunteers who share their skills and knowledge in a number of ways: from delivering our newsletter, assisting in the office, helping in the gardens, serving on our Board and completing specific projects. We would love to hear from anyone who would like to join our team.
We wouldn’t be able to operate as effectively as we do, without the assistance of our funding bodies.
