The warmer weather is on its way and our attention tends to turn to activities we can do outside. Well, we might have the opportunity you are looking for….. The Scott Ave Maara Kai, or communal garden is based at the Scott Ave Reserve. There is already quite a lot of community involvement with the garden. Ebabies and Room 8 from Owhata School, and Kidzworld Early Childhood Centre, have planted and tended vegetables in our garden boxes. We will be seeing students from Owhata Primary School helping with the planting. Current projects have included espaliered fruit trees and berry plants along the fencing, growing grapes and passionfruit and the planting of fruit trees (pear, apple, orange and feijoa). Jason Mikaere, from Good News Ministries, who coordinates the garden, is looking for some adults who would like to volunteer their time on a number of activities –growing and planting the plants, weeding, mowing the lawns and keeping the garden tidy. Jason is also looking for people who can help to harvest and preserve the food grown at the garden. There are even a couple of building projects. You don’t have to have a lot of knowledge about gardening. Learning about how to grow healthy and nutritious food is one of the benefits of being part of this community project. Another benefit is meeting others or gaining work experience for your CV. If you would like to learn more about how to get involved in the Scott Ave Maara Kai, please phone either Jason on 021 875 225 or Jill on 027 494 8322.
