The Mokoia Community Association secured funding from the Rotorua Lakes Council Long Term Plan to install Eastside Youthspace at Puketàwhero Park. Plans are underway to begin the 2 Stage development in the next few months. The Youth Space Development aligns strongly to working together with the community to achieve the community’s vision for Rotorua 2030, in particular:
- Outstanding places to play … Papa whakatipu Recreation opportunities are part of our lifestyle; connecting us, transporting us and surrounding us.
- A resilient community … He hāpori pūmanawa Inclusive, liveable and safe neighbourhoods give us a sense of place; and confidence to be involved and connected.
The Youth Spaces Project will provide Puketàwhero Park with a mix of playground, seating, social spaces and skateable features. The design of the space and equipment provides for the evolution of both children and young persons’ needs as they grow. With three of the four Rotorua youth spaces now complete we have seen the impact this project has had in these neighbourhoods. Community engagement with the community has been carried out over the past 12 months to identify the needs of the community for this space. Building on from the Youth Space developments for these communities, RLC wanted to ensure young people were supported to play in these spaces. Council invested and attracted sustainable funding for a Youth Space Activity Programme (ER@P) or Eastside Rangatahi at the Park.
